Founded in 1991 for the production of the HyperTheater LARP “Ghosts in the Machine” (CyberArts III), As If Productions has been at the forefront of digital innovation since the internet was text-only, crafting bespoke interactive systems, captivating games, dynamic websites, and unique interactive art pieces.

1986
Roleplaying Games
Tod’s work for RPG publishers Iron Crown Enterprises in the 1980s led to one of their most popular games: “CyberSpace” (1989).
Roleplaying Game Design & Theory continues to influence AIP’s work to the present day.
1991
Hypertheater
As If Productions was officially founded in 1991 for the production of “Ghosts in the Machine” (Cyberarts III, 1992), an 8-hour theatrical LARP that set the stage for a new wave of digital artistry and experimental innovation. Over the next few years AIP would produce several other Hypertheater pieces, including “World of Ideas” (People Assisting The Homeless, 1994) in Los Angeles.
1993
Adventure Games
Tod designed the “Ocean Voyager” CD-ROM game in 1993 for publisher Judson Rosebush, entering the PC gaming industry with this Smithsonian Award-Winning game for Times-Mirror Magazines; the first of 6 CD-ROM games for various publishers.
1996
Online Worlds
In what began as a documentation project for ThePalace chat server (a product of Intel), we soon became developers of virtual worlds for clients such as Comedy Central and Epic Records, and taking home a 1999 GII Award for “The World of South Park.”
2000
Web Development
After the Dotcom crash left many online companies struggling to get by, we expanded our services to include state-of-the-art website development, ecommerce and technical support, for clients like Dr Susan Love and Queen Latifah.
2014
Narrativist Systems
Modern RPG design underwent some changes in the 2010s, yielding a new subgenre often referred to as “Narrativism,” which places character dilemmas, narrative structures, and thematic composition above mere simulation. Returning to the field with lessons learned in other mediums, Tod’s work continues to push the envelope with narrativist collaborative storygames like DayTrippers and CORE.
2018
Hybrid Publishing
With the publication of the first book in the UbiquiCity series, the As If Books division was launched in 2018. Since then the imprint has published weird novels and anthologies by a talented circle of speculative fiction writers including Shawn Koch, DeAnna Knippling, and Rick Rosenkranz.
