“The unconscious mind is not a subordinate of the conscious mind but a companion, guiding and changing when asked with respect and understanding…”
Field: Psychologist, psychiatrist, hypnotherapist.
Born: 1901, Aurum, Nevada.
Background: Despite facing numerous health challenges in his early life, including polio that left him with a significant disability, Erickson became a prominent figure in psychology. He completed his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin and went on to develop a unique approach to psychotherapy that emphasized the use of metaphor, storytelling, and conversational techniques. His innovative methods laid the groundwork for modern practices in hypnosis and therapy. Erickson founded the Milton H. Erickson Foundation in 1980, promoting training and research in his therapeutic methods. His compassion, insight, and intuition made him a pivotal link in the development of the non-intrusive “conversational” style of hypnosis which led to prctices such as NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), and his hypno-therapeutic case success record remains unmatched to this day.
Works: Erickson authored numerous articles and books on hypnosis and psychotherapy, with notable titles including Hypnotherapy: An Experimental Approach (1959), The Collected Papers of Milton H. Erickson (1980), and My Voice Will Go with You (1982).
Lesson: Change is always possible, through understanding and communication.
